What is an oral GLP-1 tablet?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are a class of drugs that mimic a hormone released after eating, reducing appetite and slowing gastric emptying. They were originally available only as weekly injections (Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro). Oral tablet versions remove the need for injections, which has made them significant developments in the weight management treatment landscape.

1. Wegovy tablet (oral semaglutide) — available now
The Wegovy tablet is the weight management–approved oral semaglutide formulation from Novo Nordisk. It uses the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection pen but in oral form, combined with the SNAC absorption technology that allows the peptide to be absorbed through the stomach lining.
Dosing: Must be taken on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before food, with a small amount of water (no more than 120ml). The dose escalation runs from 0.25mg to 2.4mg over 68 weeks.

2. Rybelsus (oral semaglutide for diabetes) — available but not for weight management
Rybelsus is also oral semaglutide from Novo Nordisk, but it is approved in the UK specifically for type 2 diabetes management, not for weight management. It comes in lower doses (3mg, 7mg, 14mg) than the Wegovy tablet. While semaglutide does cause weight loss at any dose, Rybelsus cannot be legally prescribed in the UK for weight management purposes and should not be confused with the Wegovy tablet.

3. Orforglipron — not yet available in the UK
Orforglipron is a small-molecule non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist from Eli Lilly. Unlike the Wegovy tablet, it does not require strict fasting and timing rules. Phase 3 trial results (the OPAL programme) showed significant weight loss versus placebo. As of June 2026, orforglipron has not received MHRA approval and is not available from any UK provider.

What about Ozempic in tablet form?
Ozempic is the brand name for injectable semaglutide used for type 2 diabetes. There is no Ozempic tablet. The oral semaglutide formulation for weight management is sold as the Wegovy tablet. The oral version for diabetes is Rybelsus. Despite common searches for “Ozempic tablet”, no such product exists in the UK.
What about other GLP-1 drugs in tablet form?
Several other companies are developing oral GLP-1 options. Novo Nordisk is also developing oral amycretin (a GLP-1/amylin co-agonist). Retatrutide (GLP-1/GIP/glucagon triple agonist) from Eli Lilly is in phase 3 trials but is an injection. The oral pipeline is expected to expand significantly over 2026–2028.
