Wegovy FAQ (UK)
Clear, practical answers about Wegovy: who it’s for, how dosing works, what to expect, side effects, NHS vs private access, and how to compare prices safely.
Getting started
Wegovy is a brand of semaglutide used for weight management. It mimics a natural hormone (GLP-1) that helps reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness and slow stomach emptying. It’s used alongside changes to diet and activity, and is prescribed only after a clinical assessment.
Wegovy is indicated for weight management alongside diet and activity. For adults, it’s generally used for BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related health condition. It’s also indicated for some adolescents aged 12+ with obesity and body weight above 60 kg, under specialist clinical assessment. Individual providers may apply additional safety and support criteria.
NHS access is usually through specialist weight-management services and depends on local pathways and capacity. Even when guidance supports use, you typically need referral into an eligible service rather than a simple GP prescription. If you’re exploring NHS access, ask your GP about referral to local specialist weight-management services.
They contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but are licensed for different indications and come in different dose strengths. Wegovy is the weight-management product; Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes.
Doses & using Wegovy
Wegovy is titrated gradually. The usual step-up schedule uses 0.25 mg → 0.5 mg → 1.0 mg → 1.7 mg → 2.4 mg once weekly as maintenance. If needed for adults with obesity, the SmPC also describes a higher 7.2 mg once-weekly option (given as three 2.4 mg injections), but dose changes should always follow prescriber guidance and tolerability.
If you miss a dose, the SmPC guidance is to take it as soon as possible within 5 days of the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next dose on your usual day. If you miss more than one dose, ask your prescriber about restarting (sometimes a lower re-start dose is advised).
No special diet is required, but results are better with a structured approach: protein-first meals, plenty of fibre, and mostly minimally-processed foods. Because appetite can drop sharply, focus on nutrition quality (protein, fruit/veg, hydration) rather than simply ‘eating less’.
Wegovy can support weight loss without exercise, but activity improves fitness, preserves muscle and helps long-term maintenance. A practical baseline is regular walking plus strength training 2×/week if you can.
Results & side effects
Many people notice appetite changes in the first couple of weeks, but meaningful weight-loss tends to build over time as you titrate. Progress isn’t perfectly linear—week-to-week fluctuations are normal. Focus on the trend over 4–8 weeks, not day-to-day scale changes.
Results vary. In clinical studies, many people lost a meaningful amount of weight when Wegovy was combined with lifestyle support, but individual outcomes depend on starting weight, dose tolerated, adherence and other health factors. Your clinician will help set realistic expectations.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal—nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, reflux/heartburn, stomach discomfort and reduced appetite. They’re most common when starting or increasing dose and often improve with time.
Start with smaller portions, avoid very fatty/greasy meals around injection day, eat slowly, and choose ‘bland and simple’ foods when symptoms flare. Sip fluids little-and-often. If nausea is persistent, ask your prescriber about staying longer on your current dose or using an anti-nausea medicine.
Seek urgent medical advice if you can’t keep fluids down, feel faint or dehydrated, have severe or persistent abdominal pain, or develop symptoms that concern you (especially if you have diabetes or other complex conditions). For emergency symptoms call 999; for urgent advice call NHS 111.
Safety, pregnancy & long-term planning
Alcohol isn’t strictly prohibited, but it can worsen nausea/reflux and can make it harder to maintain a calorie deficit. If you drink, start small, avoid drinking close to injection day, and prioritise hydration. If you have diabetes or take other medicines, discuss alcohol risks with your clinician.
Some people with type 2 diabetes may use semaglutide as part of diabetes care, but the best product and dose depends on your situation and other medicines. Because blood sugar can change, medication adjustments and monitoring may be needed—this must be managed by your diabetes team or prescriber.
Wegovy is not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you’re planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your prescriber promptly for advice. If you’re of childbearing potential, discuss contraception and pregnancy planning with your clinician.
It can be safe if you use a regulated UK pharmacy or clinic that conducts a proper clinical assessment and provides follow-up. Avoid ‘no-questions-asked’ sellers and social-media offers. You should be able to identify the registered pharmacy and see clear prescribing and complaints processes.
Prices, discount codes & our rankings
Total cost can include the medication, consultation/assessment, ongoing monitoring, delivery and support features. Some providers discount first orders only, while others keep prices stable. Always compare the final checkout total for your specific dose.
No. Eligibility is based on clinical suitability. Codes only reduce the price after you’ve completed the assessment and a prescriber has approved treatment (if appropriate).
We aim to rank by real total cost for each dose and clear provider policies. Some providers may pay commission through links, but we focus on verified pricing and transparent comparisons. If you spot a pricing change, tell us and we’ll review it.
